Welcome! The Pickering Reading Circle is entering its 30th year.
“Reading Circle” is a FREE tutoring program that helps children develop their literacy and other Foundational skills.
Since starting The Pickering Reading Circle has helped over 2000 children in imporving their foundational skill sets, mainly numeracy and literacy in English and French. In speaking to participants who wake up early on a Saturday morning to work on improving their education skill sets we can see the value of our services. They are excited to learn, build confidence and greater self-esteem. Students who go through our progam are well on their way to achieving their full potential in their education careers.
For volunteers the reward lies in seeing and hearing the improvements in a child’s confidence when they achieve small or big success at school. They also build on their own skill set for joining their communities as contributing adults. Volunteers are given the opportunity to mentor a younger student, build on their team spirit, hone their leadership skills and so much more.
Foundation skills are very important if not the most important aspect of learning during early childhood education. Our mission is to provide the opportunity for every child to excel by giving them the support, opportunities, assistance and tools to perform at the best level of their abilities. Our volunteers will work with young children to foster a love of learning, to improve their chances of success during those early years, which will help to change the outcome of the future learning years.
